Well, since this section seemed to be rather lonely without any topic's I thought i'd go ahead and make one Smile

How many of you have tried out any of the Catacomb games? Its fairly close to Wolfenstein 3D's game play, and since ROTT uses a heavily modified Wolf engine, I figured it wouldn't be to far-fetched to think some of you might have tired out one of these games at one point.

I won them but to my shame I've never booted them up. Disgraceful, I know...

I never owned a PC when all these old classic PC games came out as I was a hardcore Amiga man so I missed out at the time. Nowadays, it's not quite so simple to run these games which puts me off. As an example; I've always wanted to play Shadowcaster but I have never got the game to run no matter what I try so I end up sticking to the few 'safe' games from that era, namely ROTT, Doom and Wolf3D. All of these games run stably and easily (at least once VDMS is installed!).

I know that's no excuse and I really should find the time (and methods) to try out these games but, you know, I'm old and thick! Razz

I only tried Catacomb Abyss... And that was just recently. Didn't really get that far though. Surprised

Like Per-Scan, I never had a PC back when most of these games were released... Except the difference is that I lacked a computer altogether. The closest thing I had was my NES.

I was actually like Dopefish here, only it was the SNES for me. I played Doom and Duke Nukem when I was very young, but that was only when I went over to my grandpa's...as I didn't have a computer back then.

My grandfather was a major computer guru and gaming guy. He had tons of computers, games, commidor 64's, amiga's...you name it, he had at. It was like Christmas everytime I came over Very Happy (How many other people can honestly say they had epic Dukematches with there grandfather Cool ) Fast forward all these years later, sadly he's no longer around, and he left all his computer stuff to me. As i've been getting those old computers out testing what works and whats on them, I find games that where still installed here and there, and one had the Catacomb games still on them (Excluding Catacomb Armaggedon I believe). Since I had time, I figured why not and gave them a try. I was actually quite surprised to see a wolfenstein style game when I loaded it up. Up to that point I never knew there was anything before Wolfenstein, so once I did some research and found that there where I was surprised.

Overall I think there some fun games, certainly interesting. Though a bit of a funny story. The first one I tried was Catacomb 3D, and I actually played quite a ways into the game. Then I went online learning a bit more about the game, and I came across a negative review of it mostly complaining about how all the levels had the same song looping over and over and over again.

Then it hit me. It DID have the same song looping again and again! For some reason it never registered as I was playing, and for about the next week after playing I had that tune from Catacomb going on in my head continuously Razz

@ dopefish: Did you enjoy what little you played of it?

So guys fill me in. Is it all in real-time or is there a turn-based element to it as well? I presume the gameplay is of a slower pace than Wolf and ROTT...

@Lawstiker: It's nice to see the inspiration through the generations and it's nice to see the hardware lasting as well... At the least it's helped give you an appreciation of some of the old gems out there and it's certainly given you some fond memories... nice story. Smile

It is realtime... It's an FPS except you use things like magic to shoot things with.

Yep its all real time fps action. I know Catacomb 3D is pretty close to Wolfenstein in overall looks, but the three trilogy versions have a different feel from that to me...there is another old fps I would compare those to but I just can't quite remember it. I know its certainly not as fast paced as ROTT, but I wouldn't say there all that far from wolf paced action. I would say give them a try sometime, see if you like them or not.

@Per-Scan: Glad you liked it Smile I certainly have learned quite a bit about the golden age of gaming from him. Personally I find myself enjoying these old time games more then modern day stuff these days.

Good luck finding those disc's Smile Hope you enjoy trying them out.

For some reason i've always enjoyed playing the catacomb games. There's just something about them that I love...but just can't put a finger on it. I could have sworn there was a wolfenstein port that had support for the first 3d one...put sadly I can't seem to remember which one could do that Sad

Who knows, maybe it doesn't exist and my brain just invented it.

I'm going to post this here for future reference or in case any lurkers might find this interesting. Apparently my brain didn't make it up, and it was the WinWolf 3Dport that had some support for these games.

I'll have to give that a try. I think I've got Winwolf installed on my netbook so I'll look it out later as I haven't had any luck running Catacombs as is...

I almost missed this. Your having problems getting them to run? What are you trying it on? A old pc or through some emulation program?

I've tried running it on my 3 laptops all of which have XP on them. I've actually managed to get it to run but with no sound. This really puts me off playing it because sounds is really important to me. To the point where I find sound in a game more important than graphics. I've tried DOSBox and VDMS but the game just doesn't load at all... VDMS hangs and DOSBox just crashes and I can't find any error messages...
