I noticed that Lawstriker has played with Marathon before so I figured "Why not create a thread for it?"

Marathon is a series of FPS games made by Bungie (Of Halo fame) for Macintosh. The first one was release around the same time as DOOM. They have released the games for free and have since Open sourced it. You can download it for free here: http://source.bungie.org/index.php/Get_Marathon

Has anyone else played with this?
And what about AlephOne?
What do you think about the game?

I am currently playing through the Marathon Mod to end all Marathon Mods, Eternal X.

I've really tried to like it but I just find the controls too annoying. There's also a bit too much reading involved! I like the concept of the game, I like some of the art and I really like the music.

Every once in a while I pull it out and dust it off (Ooo-err!) but end up giving up after a wee while.

Well it would either be that or Rubicon X. Though I just absolutely LOVE these games. I essentially game from the marathon community, and have spent quite a bit of time learning about things about it. I know these are not games that everyone likes, but for me it hit the spot and I enjoy playing them again and again. I've played a crapload of TC's for this game, and have stored up gigs of data for this game in my archive.

So yes I have played these games quite a bit Smile. I pretty much know about just every single TC that was made or planned about the game (Consider it an obsession of sorts). I will tell you though...the community could be friendlier Confused (oh and the creator of Eternal, Forrest, is a very, very awesome guy Smile )

I remember who you are now! Your that guy with the long post that posted in the Marathon, Hexen thread saying "Still sucks though!" on Doomworld! Blasphemer!!! (and I don't mean the Freeheretic Project either Wink )

Nah in all good Smile. I know its a game thats just not for everyone Very Happy

Though honestly you should give Phoenix a try. Its the most action based out of all the Marathon TC's.

Damn, my cover's blown! Yeah, that's me. It's true though, I really have tried to get into it. I even bought the 360 version in case the controller fixed the floaty controls (I might've mentioned that in the Marathon/Hexen thread) but, alas, no. You still float all over the place!

So, what is it you guys like about it so much?

hmm...thats going to take some thought for me. There's quite a few things about it I love, and I don't have time to write a long response now. I'll get back to you on that later Per-Scan Smile

One thing I liked about it was the overall style of the game. The feel of the levels and whatnot... It almost felt Metroid'ish in some of the alien levels in Marathon 1. Also, granted there is a lot of reading, but the story and everything about the universe you are in is very rich and detailed... There is an abundance of secrets in just the terminals you read.

I've kinda shied away from the community though since they don't seem like the nicest bunch. Surprised

Oh, and sorry Lawstriker, but to be honest, I didn't like Rubicon X all that much. Surprised
Marathon Red and Marathon Evil were fun though.

Its pretty much the so called members of the "CLIQUE" that created that feel of un-welcomeness that is felt there. Its even quite odd considering they are the biggest contributers to the community. Though i've talk to quite a few of the older fans from the early days, and there far nicer Smile

And I to preferred Eternal X (though I may be biased as I've talked to forrest a bit), its just when people talk about the two best in the community, people are either for Rubicon or Eternal.

I loved Evil and Red (Try playing Red on the hardest difficulty Wink, thats one of the toughest things I've ever played). Evil had those awesome devlins, and I just love the whole theme around Red (Plus the bosses are some of the most awesome things I've ever seen, especially Michael)

Have you tried Tempus Irae by any chance?

You should give it a try if you get the chance, it had a very, very memorable fell to it Smile

Oh and if you really liked Eternal...perhaps you may have liked Where Monsters are in Dreams.

I took some time to think about it, and I finally have my answer Smile

Everything really! I love its atmosphere, its music, its aliens, its textures, the silly bob allies, the weapons...even the hovering!

There's just something about this game that really stuck with me when I downloaded it for the first time. At first...I was a little "meh, I've seen better"...but I played with it more and more and it was just plain fun for me to play. I stayed away from Infinity at first, as it was HEAVILY story based and was a little confusing. Hell, most that play Infinity have to play it a second time or third time to understand it properly. I just really grown attached the more I played the games more and more. Then I started to move on to the total conversions and such...and it just kept on going and going.

To be honest, I don't think I could really explain why I love it. I just do Razz
