I have been talking with Birger a bit and have been asking things about his editor. After telling him there where people that where interested in seeing its development continue, he has released v1.20 of his editor. From what I know this is just a test version. He has tried to made it as stable as he can with current knowledge, and has told me he has added a few new features to it. I cannot say what these features are exactly, but from just looking at it I can tell he as added the ability to adjust your height in 3d mode now, meaning you are no longer forced to look at things just from the floor of the map.

He has told me that if anyone has further crashes with this program, please describe in full detail the events that let to the crash, and the crash itself. You can post it here if you wish, and I will relay it to Birger if you do encounter anything. As far as I know, improving things and making things run smoother is not his goal for this release, but just to make it stable.

Now for you fellow ROTTers, I have a request. Please try this editor out, and leave as much feedback as possible about this editor, even if you have no desire to use it as your primary editing tool. I can see this as one day being a very good tool for editing ROTT (I have just recently found out it had a internal program similar to ROTTMultiTool), and this could be out chance to get Birger working on this and making a very good up to date editor for the community. One of the reason he stopped working on this was lack of feedback, so lets try and not let this happen again.

Now, to download the new version, click here Smile

And remember, if you encounter any crashes please describe the events that led to it in detail.

So it just does this when you double click on the exe file?

And was this working properly at one point?

Birger has done a few additional changes to his map editor, and has released v1.20a now. Get it here

I don't think to much was done that you can physically see, just fixed some possible bad problems in his words.

Also this is to Hammer. If you try this new version out, and still cannot get it to run, then I will contact you via PM and I will get the details to how it stop functioning the first time. I doubt Birger can do much without knowing what caused the problem to begin with.

Hmm, I still just one thing to complain...ah...

The info plane editing in this editor is sucks. :p
Well, that's the only problem I think, otherwise this editor is just awesome.

I'm not make a demand but I just hope Birger will implement the complete info plane editing..., not just some number data that make no sense... :\

I agree, the info plane can be a bit confusing at first...and isn't exactly all that user friendly.

Since I cannot just relay "Hey your info plane sucks fix it please", how would you prefer it to work? One of the best kinds of feedback is the kind where you suggest what you would like to see, not just that you do not like what you see Razz

Ah, that's my bad...

I think it can be like ROTTed or RMD, a window about all info plate data, like BG/FG tiles data, cell informations like info tile, song, Exit to level, Story, Story Fraction and X/Y Locations / Minutes and Seconds data, and similar things.

:p

(I was asked this when it was released but it still not get any change... :\)

Agreed. To be honest there are qute a few things I'd like changed or added but I suppose stability is the priority just now. And with that in mind, I can't say I've had a single problem with it crashing (That's a first for me!).

Hammer, how are you getting on with it? Any progress or more info? Smile

Alright, I'll relay this to Birger and see what he says about it. Perhaps with the increased community activity it might get changed this time.

Right, you asked for it!

First, a couple of things from RMD that work really well and I miss in this. The first would be the ability to draw lines and and other shapes. In fact, being able to draw lines at all would be good! It makes getting a rough idea down when the muse strikes very quick and easy. Another thing that's in RMD but that could do with an update in a modern editor is being able to cut & past sections. You can do this in RMD and you can also flip these cut out areas. What I'd like added is a rotation feature. For instance, cut a section, rotate it 90 degrees and then paste it in place. Again this allows for quick and easy editing of symmetrical areas amongst other things. That's the handy bits from RMD I'd like to see added and improved upon.

A thing that's in RMD but not particularly an innovation of it is having the sprite window open at all times. It works similarly to any modern paint program and I find I can't really do without it. Again, it's quick and easy to pick what you like and it saves lots of clicking to get to a window that then closes so that you have to do it again... So I would like to be able to keep the sprite and wall windows open at all times. Following the paint program model, I'd like a picker/dropper icon and shortcut key that when clicked on lets me pick a wall or item from the map rather than having to go to the windows again.

I'd like a 'Home' button that takes you to either the P1 start point or to the last edited tile. I'd like to be able to double click the 3D view window to change it's size between the 320 and 640 sizes. Also, a menu option to quick load the working map directly into WinROTT. Since the editor needs the Darkwar files I've just place it in my WinROTT folder so for me all the files are together already. Oh, and tooltips (for beginners like me!).

Please remember I'm a complete noob at mapping and using editors so perhaps some of these things are already present and I just haven't found them (certain keystroke conventions for instance). So forgive me if I've missed some of the abilities of the editor already. Smile

I've got lots of other pedantic things but I reckon this verbose post has probably bored you already!

Bet you're glad you asked now! Razz

Can't say I'm an experianced mapper myself Wink

Anyway I don't mind the long post. You made some valid opinions and I will be sure to relay these to him when the time comes Smile

I like ROTTed because I can double click for info plane editing.
In RMD, I needed Shift-Click, it's OK but I more like double click. :p

Well, even Birger's editor is awesome, but its function keys is more confuse for me... like Build engine editor, I still cannot finger it out... :\

Having trouble with Build are you? I use to be the same way. I loaded it up the first time, and literally said "wtf am I looking at?". I couldn't figure anything out, and closed it down, not to be touched for another 6 years. Then I loaded it up again, played with it, learned a few things...then shut it down again. 2 years later, I would open up mapster32, play with it a bit. etc.

Then after about 2 months after that, I used mapedit for blood...and I finally learned how to use build Razz. After that I learned everything like nothing. Then I went back to duke, and after all those years of not knowing what the hell I was doing...boom, I knew how to use it. After I did, it was so easy and simple to make stuff with it Smile.

If your having problems with it, I could help you out Cool
