Eh, I also meant Jump Pad...

Also, I've always liked fast characters, they make dodging so easy if the are allows it. So I will play as Lorelei almost all the time.

Hmmm, I wonder how many other places Lorelei will be able to take a "short-cut" due to her increased speed.

For example, in my map entitled "Pushed to the Limit" you should not be able to get to the gold key in the first room without a *LOT* of work. I will have to give it a try tonight. If she can get to that key easily, it will ruin my level, literally... Hmmm....

I had always wondered about differences between characters, and I to was unaware that she was capable of that. I'll have to keep these things in mind with my levels as well.

Hope this new information doesn't hinder your map work to much Sad

@Per-Scan: I actually haven't had that much trouble with Winrott, though I have only used it to play through a little bit of Dark War. Think i'll switch over to DOS ROTT, as its clear thats what Mike is developing it for.

If it becomes too much of a bind to adjust maps maybe you could just add a text file stating that if you play with Lorelei (nudge, nudge, wink, wink!) you'll break the map. Kind of like the ZDoom situation with jumping and ducking.

@Lawstiker, I often hit the wall with regards to WinROTT. I vainly try it out now and again but I end up just going back to the original. The most stable build for me is 1.44. Anything after that just causes me grief and that's on both my PC's so it's nothing at my end that I'm aware of...

The only problem I've found with DOS ROTT is that there is a slight delay in the sounds being played (usually just after the event starts) but it's nothing too critical that'll spoil the game. Though I do wish there was a way to sync the sound being the pedant that I am... Smile

Indeed, it appears that Lorelei is so fast she's able to get to the gold key without solving the "puzzle". Ugh.

Nobody reads README files.

This is a disaster.
If I modify it so that Lorelei cannot get to the gold key without solving the puzzle, I don't think that Doug Wendt would ever be able to get to it.
Hmmmmm......

Well that just sucks Sad , sorry to hear that about you map. Times like this I wish you could set it so each character has its own specific missions that are unique to that character, that way you could avoid things like this.

I do Smile...but then again its rare to have someone actually read it.

@Per-Scan: Kinda wish J Bailey was still around here, that way you could give him suggestions and hopefully help improve it. But DOS ROTT is still pretty good Smile

Ok, I was able to change the map so that Lorelei can't "cheat" with her speed to get the gold key too quickly.

I've uploaded the fixed version to the same spot on my web site:
http://mikemiller.net/rott/MIKE1.ZIP

I'll probably have to go through everything to see what the hell else I might have to change...

I'll upload a whole new version once I get all my maps split up to alleviate the crashing.

Thanks, all, for pointing this out to me (in a way)

-Mike

Hey Mike, in light of these new problems, would you like me to take your map file off of the ROTTpository map list until a more stable version is released?

Either that or replace it with http://mikemiller.net/rott/MIKE1.ZIP
It might be "less work" for you to just replace it, so the placeholder will be there for later.

I should be finished with splitting up/correcting my levels soon.

For what it's worth, here's what I see often when the game crashes because I ostensibly have "too many items" in the level:

The main problem is that it happens seemingly at random. Sometimes I can finish a level without it ever crashing, and the next time it crashes for no obvious reason. Fun. Crying or Very sad

Well, Malloc is Memory Allocation, DOS only gives it's programs 640Kb to work with, this would happen when it has a hard time finding a consistent block of memory to allocate.

Ah well, I will tell you if I see any ways Lorelei can break your levels.

Thanks.

Of course you may not recognize that something you achieve should have been harder....

Well I usually just play as Taradino Cassatt all the time, plus I'll be playing your levels in DOS ROTT from now on.

Besides, its good to have someone that plays as that. May give you hell in the redevelopment of the levels, but at least in the end after going through all that you should have an awesome ROTT level that you invested great time and care into making Very Happy

Well, I'm making good progress on splitting up my huge maps into smaller chunks. So far I've managed to turn 5 maps into 11. One map was so big and had so many "things" in it that I had to split it into three.

It's rather annoying I can't make the monster level I want to make, but that's what I get for trying to develop for a DOS game that's 15 years old. Smile

So anyway, instead of trying to make each level separate and distinct, I've simply made the game "end" and "continue" at good breaking points. For example, you might get off an elevator and enter a new area and just as you're getting a glimpse of your new surroundings, the level ends. The new level begins at precisely the same place, for continuity. I rather like the effect.

The time-consuming piece of this process will be in playing all the levels from the start, without cheat codes, to make sure the player has the right level of weaponry at the start of each level, to make sure there are no further crashes, etc.
