|
|
I have been in a little contact with Dopefish (not our one!) with regards to ROTT DS development. I don't know if any of you have tried it but it's actually a really great port and is totally playable (unlike the iPhone version). It does lack a couple of features though such as Comm-Bat and the ability to load external maps.
Has anyone, other than me, played this? Do you even own a DS?? Dopefish has said that if there was some interest he may pick up development again...
If online multiplayer was to be pulled off and if we all had a DS this could be the answer to our Comm-Bat needs!
So, what do you all think? |

Nah, I should be fine... I'll wait for a BannerBomb-like app to throw on my SD Card to install Homebrew. :p
Thanks for the offer though. _________________ -Swim, swim, hungry |

I was wondering if this guy had any more plans for this. I do have a DS (the old phat version), but I lent it to my friend awhile back to play the new Pokemon games and I have YET to get it back. Need to clonk him over the head and get it back one of these days.
Though sadly I have never ventured into DS homebrew all that much. Messed around heavily with PSP and Dreamcast homebrew, but not the DS. _________________ Head on over to the Rise of the Triad HQ for ROTT news, downloads, and more!

The DS is such an easy machine for homebrew. You buy a card (CycloDS or Acekard, whatever), copy some emulators, games and utilities and then you play. There's no worries about jail-breaking or special firmwares. And the cards are dead cheap!
There are a ton of great things for the DS including ROTT, Doom, Heretic, Hexen, an amazing version of Descent, there's even a version of ScummVM and DOSBox! Most older computers ((up to and including the Atari ST) are emulated to a high standard and thanks to the touch screen there's no worries about a qwerty keyboard as this is emulated too. Of course all the classic consoles are well catered for too. Though SNES emulation isn't quite at 100% thanks to some games requiring the FX chip...

Nice
Seems like DS emulation is doing good. I might check into that. How many people would have to express interest before he would consider working on it again? _________________ Head on over to the Rise of the Triad HQ for ROTT news, downloads, and more!

He didn't say. All he said with regards to that was:
"If there's interest, I'd certainly consider putting out an update though. I'd love to get comm-bat working for one thing."
I'm not sure if that interest would have to come from the DS scene and if he's talking loads of interest... It's still a great port as it is but it would be nice to be able to have multiplayer and the ability to play custom maps...
Hopefully I'll hear more soon. |

I use to mess with PSP homebrew awhile back, and use to have the PSP ROTT port on it, so I wasn't to surprised that there was one for the DS. What I was really surprised to find out was there was a ROTT port for the Xbox! _________________ Head on over to the Rise of the Triad HQ for ROTT news, downloads, and more!

Have you played the XBox version? I presume it's just the same as the DOSBox version as found at GOG.com. I think I'll check out Youtube for a look-see.
By the way, I haven't heard back from Dopefish for a few days. I think I may have inadvertently offended him by sharing a list of 'improvments' I thought up... . Still, nevermind, I'm sure it's all fine really. |

Probably, I don't really know to much about Xbox homebrew as I never messed with it.
I'm sure it is, he may just be busy with things at the moment _________________ Head on over to the Rise of the Triad HQ for ROTT news, downloads, and more!

Well, basically, he said to me that he had stopped development for it as he was pretty happy with it and there wasn't anything else that he wanted to do. Then I hit him with this:
"Firstly, I'd love to be able to load other custom maps. I would certainly find this a great boon to the DS version. Just a simple menu option like the iPhone game but with the option for external files. I also find the music and SFX to be a bit glitchy and the Jukebox has never worked for me (it says it's streaming my chosen track but it just loops a small part of the first tune. The frame-rate could also be a little smoother though I don't know if that's possible with hardware limitations etc.
Of course, Comm-Bat would be amazing but I understand if this was never to happen..."
Obviously, this is out of the context of the mail. I wasn't quite so blunt as to just tear into a list of wants! |
