Today I went to one of those small dollar shops, a place called the Dollar General, to pick up some nutrigrain bars. When I went up and paid for it and got the receipt back...it was about 14 inches long! All I bought was one item! I can go buy all my groceries at a local Walmart and still won't get a receipt that long!

The actual part of the receipt (item, amount, barcode etc ) was only about 3 and a half inches, the rest of it was advertisement! on a receipt! Is it just me or is this a serious waste of paper? I mean I can understand receipts that have little contest's or surveys on them, but ads for internet services, direct tv...

Does anyone else feel this is a waste of paper, or am I just crazy Smile

Of course it's a waste of paper. But evidently the company/store feels it's worth the extra cost for them, as apparently the ads on the receipt brings them more business.

I totally agree. There is so many resources just being used and abused but supposedly 'everyone cares about the environment' these days... Just the junk mail I get everyday is enough reason to warrant an enquiry into ethical practices if you ask me.

BTW, I'm not a right-on hippy type. I just think it's really obvious - if we keep on using everything way too much it's not good for anybody. Temperance, that's what I say.

That is certainly a good way to put it. Maybe one ad would be ok...but I was just surprised THAT was the place they where putting them now. Whats even better is with that store you don't even really need a reason to keep it, and you can just simply say you don't want it and right in the trash it goes, 14 inches of paper wasted.

Yeah, the thoughtless printing out and then dumping of receipts is symptomatic of other flaws in our way of life. When I ran my shops I switched off the automatic receipt printing on the tills. At the end of the transaction I would ask people if they wanted a receipt and only then would I print one off. I would also always ask if they wanted a bag with a slightly accusatory tone in my voice while looking at the 4 carrier bags in their hands - it was amazing how many didn't take a bag! Smile

haha Smile, I wished more places around here where like that. It would at the very least be a step in the right direction...but I guess most people have grown accustomed to having an seemingly unlimited supply of resources, and just can't see that is not the case.
