As for me I have had several projects during this past month or two. I got Eduke32 with the High resolution pack (HRP) running on Linux. Astoundingly, it is far more stable on running on Wine then running Natively, which makes no sense to me. The fact that NetDuke is a Windows Only Network Client finalized my decision to run it through Wine. If they ever release NetDuke for Linux, I'll have to stir the pot at the 3D Realms forums again to get Eduke32 working (without tons of glitches) natively.

I've also been spending time over amonth ago to attempting to Network play WinRottGL somewhat stably, but with no luck. Does everyone else here become unsycnhronized in under a minute or 3? I know the netcode is in beta form and everything, I just want to know if it is as bad on other's end as it is mine.

The followiing explain why I have suddenly disappeared from the forums for over a week. Almost 2 weeks ago I got a new system for a good price. It is my first 64 bit (as well as multi-core CPU).

The system specs are as follows:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor
abit AN-M2 Motherboard
3 GB of DDR2 RAM
evga GeForce 8500 GT
500 GB Hard Drive
M$ Windoze Vista 32-bit/Fedora 8 Dual-boot

I know it's not the fastest, and I'm planning on upgrading the video card to a GeForce 8800 GT. I saw one at Newegg for $160, I know the one on Newegg has its GPU clocked only at 600 MHz, but the $250 one at Best Buy is clocked a marginal 25 MHz faster. Will the CPU or other components of this system present any significant bottleneck as far as harnessing the power of the 8800 GT? I'm trying to run the Crysis Demo with most settings set to Medium, with the exception of Physics, Shaders, and Texture Detail set to High, (not very high) and on 800x600 too, no AA or AF. With the 8500 GT, its sort of playable on these settings, and I was able to beat the demo, but faster would be better.

Another thing that has preoccupied my time lately is the fun of getting a Day of Defeat 1.3 Linux Server up. It was kind of tricky figuring out how to get all the bots on one side. It turns out that I had to load DoD TeamManager as a plugin for AMX Mod . So I have AMX Mod X up as a a plugin for Metamod as well as Sturmbot. Do any of you guys ever play Day of Defeat? My server is not up all the time (yet) since its on my Dad's Fedora 8 Desktop. Running from 8 different installations of Half-Life Dedicated Server, we had 8 differently configured servers up just as a brief test. His system is has an Athlon XP 1500+ with 512 MB of PC2100 RAM. How many 16 or 24 player dedicated servers do you guys think I could reasonably host without creating a laggy environment? Also he's using GNOME, I am wondering if toning down the GUI to something like XFCE would be be able to squeeze more server power out of this old system. I've run the server with one game hosted with several players joined + bots and it seemed to run great.

Damn, you certainly are busy. Very Happy Thats good. eduke running better under a windows environment doesnt surprise me, since it's mostly windows only. Regarding winrottgl, I havent had much luck getting it to work multiplayer. I think it's because it needs open forwarded ports and my ISP has all the ports closed. The only way i've been able to play rott online is with dosbox, and even that way it has problems. Most of the time it won't work, it doesnt connect my client to the host, and the last time it did, the game froze a second after it connected.

Very cool new rig you bought. I doubt the cpu will limit your 8800GT, i think it's more related with the bus speed of the mainboard, maybe someone with more expertise can join in? Ive been able to run crysis at medium settings with a system similar to yours, but was kinda let down by it.

I've played DoD, i dont play it very often, is your server for the original DoD 1.3, or the source one? You could probably get more server power from a lighter desktop manage like xfce, or maybe an even lighter one like fluxbox.

Ive been busy myself too, got several projects i want to get going. I'm trying to make a game, well, a collection of levels that hopefully will make a game. Im making content for it, hopefully i'll get more time to do it this weekend. Im trying to make lots of maps for Rott, with the newly full-featured Rott mapper deluxe. It's an awesome map editor, and want to create with it a good quality map pack for everyone to play when rott gets a stable enough netplay. Very Happy

Yeah, the rig was very very cheap because it was returned twice and the store manager wanted to get rid of it. Normally I would have built my own from Newegg, but this open item special seemed to be a great deal. Turns out that the power supply was bad, so they knocked $500 off the price, making it about half the price it was a month ago.

I must not have worded my post clearly about the Graphics card. I currently have a 8500 GT, which is way worse than the 8800 GT. I don't yet have an 8800 GT, it is an upgrade I am considering. I was basically asking if my CPU could potentially harness the power of the one I am thinking about buying, which you have answered. But you know, all the reviewers test these cards with the fastest of fastest systems, which mine is not the fastest available on the market, but tremendously way faster than I had before (Athlon XP 3200+). So, I'm just not sure how well the perforamance benchmarks will represent my system.

For example, we all know that an AGP GeForce 2 MX 400 is far superior to a PCI Voodoo 2 and not just because of the Bus architecture. I attempted such an upgrade when I was in High School in order to get the old Unreal Tournament to run faster. My K6-2 paired with a Super Socket 7 board really didn't experience any improvement in framerate whatsoever with the new Graphics card after I installed the drivers and everything, so I returned the GeForce 2 Graphics card. That same year, I moved the Voodoo 2 board to an Athlon Thunderbird 1333 on a Gigabyte 7VTX-H board with a KT266A chipset and 256 MB of PC2100 DDR RAM and there was a Quantum-leap in UT's framerate even though of course the Voodoo 2 was the system's bottleneck.

I'm running the old DoD that runs on the Half-Life 1 engine. Day of Defeat:Source is a good game too, but me and everyone I play with is so used to the original DoD that it was kind of hard to grow accustomed to the new one.

That's really cool that you're designing a game. Could you tell me more about it?

Well, it' more of an exercise to get into the game making process. With a team of collaborators, I'm putting together a bunch of maps with one common theme. There's no story, plot. specific characters, etc. Just a string of levels with a common theme to them. This is just to get started. Then, after that, we'll move to a proper game.

Recently I have actually been working on a Duke Nukem Multiplayer program... Normal right? Well there is something very very special about it... I won't reveal it here. Wink
