I was just wondering what inspired your online names.

For me, I originally wasn't going to go with Lawstiker. To be honest this name was a complete accident. I had been off the net for some years, and when I returned I was struggling to come up with a username for myself. One day back when I was seriously into playing Halo 3, I went over to my friends place to download the (then)new multiplayer map pack. I was signing up for a Live profile for the first time, and was trying to think of something catchy. I knew I wanted Law in it and my first attempt was with Lawgiver, but that was already taken. After a little bit of thought I decided to go with Lawstriker. Well...that screen over at my friends was freakishly small, and apparently I had left out the "r" in Lawstriker and I had actually registered my name as "Lawstiker". I didn't even notice this until like a month later. It was a rather unique name, and one major advantage of it is I can go to just about any site and sign up with this name and its not taken Smile, so I just went with it and thats how I became Lawstiker.

Oh, and I would go on to misspell this name again. On a nintendo forum I was trying to type "Lawstiker" and ended up with "Laesticker" Razz

Anyway thats the story behind my online name, how about you guys?

Can I ask why you wanted Law in your title? Are you in the police or something?

Well, my name is a recent invention. I used to go under 2 different names but someone 'stole' them and started posting spurious stuff on the sites I frequented (Doomworld, ZDoom forums among others). So I had to change them to distance myself. So, my name was changed to protect the innocent!

I always have something with three letters so that I can put my name into old school scoreboards. I also wanted something relating to one of my favourite series - Blake Stone. There is a cool wee robot called the Perscan and I thought it would make a nice avatar. To keep the three lettered thing and to make sure nobody else would have the same name I hyphenated it to Per-Scan. That way I can have the nomenclature of Per any time I feel like saving the planet from the Galaxians. Smile

Since, I was putting so much thought into my contrivance I decided to use the location as part of my new identity. Therefore, my location is: One year in the future thus tying in my other favourite game... ROTT!! I thought San Nicolas Island wouldv'e been a little too obvious.

So there you go. My name is Per-Scan, I am a robot created by the STAR organisation, now enlisted by The Triad and I live one year in the future!

Heh, well I guess I don't need to answer this queston, do I? Smile

Actually, I usually use "Morpheus" as a screen name.
Why? Nothing to do with The Matrix, or Greek mythology.
It's actually from a song called "Morpheus Laughing" from one of my all-time favorite bands, Skinny Puppy. Not sure why I didn't choose to use it for this board (it was a couple of years ago).

Haha no not at all Smile. At the time I was working on a project for the game Marathon (Aleph One engine) and there was a AI character in it called LAW that I was working on. I was particularly proud of its character I had developed for it, and kinda wanted to play off that.

Indeed. They're probably my #2 favorite, right behind NIN.

This will take some time to describe... So I'm ready for a few "tl;dr"s Razz

Anyway, I was a kid who got all of his stuff 10 years after it was used, so my first computer was a horrendously slow 486 with Windows 98 oh-so hackishly installed on it. The only thing I was interested in with that thing was to get games running on it. MechWarrior 2 in particular. After going through a long Long LONG process of learning the best way to optimize the system so it could run it, I ended up having to install special old applications to help out. Whenever it would ask for my name, since I never really liked putting my real name on anything, I decided to type in the first thing I saw after that... My room was rather empty, and it was late at night, so I looked back, and immediately typed my name as "shadow". I used this name for everything like that from then on...

A couple of years down the line when I finally got an internet connection, I had heard about and saw many friends play a little Java MMO called "Runescape" interested for a while, I finally decided to sign up. But alas, shadow was not available... (I imagine it was probably a very popular name since it is a common word) so I decided to try with my favorite numbers at the time in order, so I tried to sign up as "shadow795", when that name was taken too... It suggested the name "shadow7590". I accepted.

After playing Runescape for a while and eventually getting bored of it, I decided to Google my nick, but the results for "shadow7590" were just... No. I decided I'd rather not be associated with that nick, so I wanted to make another one. I had been recently obsessed with the Commander Keen series and played through all the games and knew pretty much everything to do with them, I had also found a nifty little page called the "Keencyclopedia", after reading through it I took notice of the entry for "Dopefish", I personally used to actually hate the Dopefish in The Well. But the entry still intrigued me. Not so much as to become interested though. I had been digging through my shareware libraries to see if I had anything else and found a FormGen "Head 2 Head" CD, it had the games DOOM, Warcraft, and Rise of the Triad. "Rise of the Triad?" I wondered and installed it. I became obsessed with that game too for a long while, and eventually looked up the FAQ for it (I always loved reading game FAQs). I came across the Official ROTT FAQ, and read through it and noticed it also had a section on Dopefish, I played around with the Dopefish easter eggs a bit and started to like it because of it. So I Googled it the nest time I could, and found the webpage http://www.dopefish.com

I was amazed at how many references that little fish had and eventually started loving to find them. I even made a few myself. When I finally signed up for 3DRealms forums, it was with the username "dopefish7590", and I have used that nick since then.

I did too! Smile

Though a funny story. I didn't know what that meant a long time ago, and we had two guys on the marathon pfhorums called Treellama and Drictelt, and anytime some used "tl;dr" I thought it was a inside joke refering to them Razz

@Dopefish: Cool Story Cool

I did read it really! I find it quite fascinating how these names come around. I mean we take such pride in these things online but I know I get embarrassed if I have to explain it to anyone in real life!

To be honest, I only recently found out what tl;dr meant as well. It kept popping up in obnoxious posts over at the Doomworld forum a while back and I finally gave in a Googled it. Smile
