I have to say I have never played it. I'm not entirely sure if I would enjoy it beyond a short novelty and there's no way to try it without buying first... So, why is is so addictive? Isn't it just virtual Lego? One thing is for sure it's certainly taking the gaming world by storm. Smile

I personally love it... Minecraft is just beyond addicting, it has so much to do, and a ridiculous amount of replay value.

Well, the reason I like it is for all the things you can do. You start out with nothing in a randomly generated 3D world that can grow up to 8 times the size of the surface of the earth, you have to collect supplies to make tools so you can collect other supplies to make other tools, etc... There is a lot you can do with primitive electricity, or Redrock (Some call it Redstone.)... This guy made a computer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGkkyKZVzug, there is a lot more you can do though. TNT is hella fun to play with, I was hosting a server where another player (ZZT-X) made a small house with a touchplate that was connected to a string of TNT that went all the way to the bottom of the level. >.<

Also, you can combine Redrock and TNT...
Here is a nifty animal cannon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeV0XB-w_yM

The diversity makes different environments easy or hard to do stuff. The world is also different every time you start a new map. The random generation is really quite impressive making nice scenery and impressive cave systems. I have a world where the cave system is so vast that I nicknamed it "The Caverns of Chaos" (ADOM reference), I've explored it for over 5 hours and still no sign of the end.

Crafting is a great reason to like the game too, I won't spoil things here about how you make things, but it definitely adds to the game. The ways to gain resources also adds to the game. You can mine, you can harvest trees, you can farm, you can hunt... It's up to you.

It also runs natively on 64 bit Linux. Or any machine with Java for that matter.

I had one of my friends recommend this game to me once, and he made a few points similar to the ones Dopefish made. He's been quite addicted to it as well and says its a pretty fun game. I of course have been avoiding the game like the plague. I have enough on my plate to get done and don't need another addicting game to distract my time Smile

I know that feeling. If my girlfriend saw me getting hooked on another game I think she might just kill me! My addiction to Doom, Wolf, ROTT and 8 bit antiques (I love my VIC-20) is probably enough for her to take!
